PHFAT’s unprecedented rise in the South African Music Industry is as much about his warm commercial appeal as it is about his cold honest introspection. Even though a string of charting radio hits such as “Lights Out” and “The Whip” have solidified his position as a South African commercial music heavyweight, it is PHFAT’s darker and less radio-friendly singles that stitch together his carefully constructed live shows with an inimitable, primal energy that keeps fans coming back. PHFAT’s dark electronic hip beats are woven seamlessly with intricate raps, melodic hooks, charactered interludes and crowd chants that culminate in cathartic frenzies.
Although known in particular for his explosive festival performances, He is as comfortable performing to a crowd of twenty as he is to a crowd of twenty thousand, and equally at home sharing a lineup with your favourite local punk band as he is with your favourite international pop star. In fact, when the internationals are in town, PHFAT is a go to for the lineups and he has performed alongside (amongst others) Public Enemy, MGMT, Milky Chance, Casey Veggies, The Cat Empire and Rudimental as well as having headlined just about every major festival in South Africa (including Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Sonar, In The City, and more)
Dj Dimplez- initially called Dj Tumi when he began his DJ career in 2004.
Although his birth name, “Tumi” did not appeal to Channel O Vj Lungile Radu six months into his career. During an interview in the channels popular show called “Oboma”. A lot of names came up which included Tumiza, Tombstone that was all complete “no no’s”. Ten seconds before lights, camera, action, the name Dj Dimplez came up and that was the turning point of his career.
This young gentleman in his 20’s always had the love for music. The idea of Djing came as he attended Joburg events such as Reality and 115. This led to him buying his own equipment in 2003 and by 2004 he had joined the Wits Dj Society. Cramped in their own minute private room, they would often get together and practice to perfect their skills. Although hip-hop was not big in the Joburg party scene at the time, Dimplez continued playing this genre and within a few months, he found himself playing for huge crowds of thousands of people.
His career has led him to travel throughout the world playing at different events. Dimplez has also played in most clubs in Johannesburg and major corporate events, which include “The Apprentice S.A Finale”, “Blacks Only Comedy”, and the list goes on. Earning his name as one of the top hip-hop DJs, Dimplez has played alongside the likes Dj Fresh, Dj Cleo, Dj Oskido, Dj S’bu, C-live, Milkshake, Naked Dj, and Dj Kenzhero.
Pop Bottles™ is his latest events movement. These are Sunday afternoon events that cater for all types of people that enjoy different types of Hip Hop. These sessions have pulled in crowds of over 3000 people, dubbing it one of the most successful Hip Hop events in Joburg. The event has hit Durban and Cape Town where the events were a great success.
“DJ Speedsta” has become a household name in the social scenes, an alias belonging to 22-year-old Lesego Nkaiseng. This hip hop DJ from the Vaal Triangle moved to Johannesburg to further his DJ career as well as his studies, not knowing what was in store for him. Not only is he the youngest DJ to have received the commercial acclaim that he has, having recently ventured on a nationwide tour in promotion for his latest Hip Hop single “Hangout”, he’s also the presenter of his own show on Soweto TV, Urban Explosion. This youth show is about our rising stars and he’s just one of them.
After having received substantial success as a DJ, Speedsta then went on to further his music career. His singles such as Don’t Worry, featuring Cashtime Fam, Couple More featuring Maggz & Ma-E, Hangout featuring Riky Rick & Kid X, all saw Speedsta’s music career branch across all mediums, having been on high rotation on radio stations such as 5FM, YFM, Metro FM and others, as well as their respective music videos taking over television screens across the continent on channels such as Channel O, MTV Base, and TRACE to name a few. Having realised his reach has no bounds, the natural progession for Speedsta would be the recording of his debut album, expected to be released in late 2014.
His self-evident love for Hip Hop and music as a whole has been witnessed throughout his thriving career. His passion, determination and hard working nature have seen him excel as a DJ, radio and television presenter, and as an overall South African personality. Speedsta curently is a resident mix DJ on 5FM’s “The Shakedown” as well as DJ Fresh’s “Fresh in the Morning” shows. He continues to work with some of South Africa’s best musicians, and firmly believes in being an active participant in the growth of the South African music industry as a whole. At the age of just 22, he foresees no limit to his success and contribution towards the South African entertainment scene.
His name might be linked to South African hip hop, but DJ Milkshake has graduated beyond the genre to become a master of any dancefloor. His ability to read and rock any crowd, anywhere is what has made him one of Africa’s top-rated entertainers.
Milkshake has devoted the last ten years to honing his DJ skills and conquering dancefloors at the country’s top-rated clubs, parties and festivals. Leading national radio station 5FM snapped him up in 2010 and every Friday night from 22h00 to 01h00 he quenches SA’s thirst for club-rocking sounds on ‘The Shakedown’.
Recently, Milkshake’s was selected as the face and DJ of Castle Lite’s Summer 2013/14 TV Campaign and the Extra Cold Summer Tour which included a performance alongside US rap star Wale. Rubbing shoulders with the superstars is nothing new – a few months earlier he opened for R ‘n B sensation Neyo.
His interest in the mechanics of production led him into the studio in 2013 where he took on the role of producer. The first single on his newly established record label, ‘Living On The Edge’ – a collaboration between award-winning beatboxer George Avakian and highly-regarded emcee AKA smashed the charts receiving airplay on all the biggest local stations all over Africa.
What is it about his sonic approach that has created so much fever around the name DJ Milkshake?
This Soweto-raised DJ has conquered an industry that’s notoriously competitive and cutthroat. His ascent is tied to an undying urge better himself and what he offers the crowd. An early adopter of technology, Milkshake took full advantage of his flair for all things digital and merged this with his innate understanding of what will detonate a dancefloor – this potent combination of skill and passion allowed him to cultivate a matchless, magnetic take on club music. With his new approach, versatility and fresh style Milkshake has shaken up the established order and carved out a highly successful career for himself.
The last five years have been a whirlwind of parties, clubs, festivals and A-List events. Demand for his smouldering sets has placed him behind the controls at virtually every club and hip hop event in the country – and beyond South African borders in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Milkshake’s success is all his own. He has spent considerable time and energy moulding the distinctive sonic identity that his many fans and followers appreciate. His blossoming career was not instantaneous – but rather a lifetime in the making. Reach into his past and you’ll find a kid who would insist on playing only his cassettes in the car; a teenager whose vast music collection consumed most of his waking life.
While attending WITS University Milkshake made the realisation that DJing was the true vehicle in which to deliver his music. He co-founded the DJ Society and become of the hottest DJs on campus. This breakthrough also meant a difficult decision: his music career was beginning to conflict with his studies – and against the wishes of his parents, Milkshake decided to make music his primary focus.
Seizing the momentum of his fast-rising profile, Milkshake began reaching out to radio stations – submitting mixes to all the hottest radio shows and securing guest DJ residencies on Metro FM and later 5FM. He also claimed many titles in toughly fought DJ Competitions – in 2007 he was a finalist in Go-TV’s National DJ Competition and Runner up on Hennessey’s Artistry’s National DJ Competition. In 2009 he won the top spot in News Café’s National DJ competition – a title which took him on a tour around the country and overseas to Miami with none other than DJ Fresh. During that same trip Milkshake landed a gig in New York – proof that his hard work was starting to pay off.
With a steady-eyed focus and beats that rock any party, Milkshake has earned his place amongst the country’s top entertainers. In his exciting new role as a record label owner and artists you can be certain that the best is yet to come from this future-facing talent.
DJ Lyle using his art form as a platform for the public to see what is happening in the life of a Cape Town based DJ. All past, current and future events that DJ Lyle has embarked on has created a stepping stone and platform for him to continually grow and show the masses what he is really about. None of this was more evident in his most recent Boiler Room show which went live to over 1 million people
The Beatles, The Offspring, The Fugees, Biggie, Oasis. From Hip Hop and
Rock to Funk and Soul, the music that I’ve been exposed to continues to
inspire me to be the DJ that I am.
I found my beat in drums and then traded my drums for turntables, the snare drum for the mixer, cymbals for the needles and hi-hats for headphones.
To stay on the beat, I practiced on my own but it wasn’t enough. I went to
“wheels of steel” to refine the art of being a turntablist and dedicated hours of my time to the vinyls. It wasn’t talent that got me to where I am, it was my obsession. Now I move in a constant rotation of beats through the needles.
My career is in itself a highlight and I’m proud to have the track record of an international DJ.
Some of my most notable achievements include:
• 2008 DMC (South African Champion)
• 2009 DMC (South African Champion)
• 2010 Hype Magazine DJ of the Year (Nomination)
• 2012 SAHHA DJ of the Year (Nomination)
• 2012 Red Bull Threestyle (South African Champion)
• 2013 Tour DJ for Kwaai International Hip Hop Exchange.
• 2016 Resident DJ on TV Show Larger Than Life with Jason Goliath
Music is the greatest gift life has ever given me. It expresses my mood and it serves as my muse when I need inspiration. My ambition in life is to share this gift with other people – just with my personality in it.
Glen Stylez is a local Hip Hop dj and producer. He’ll be joining the Pop Bottles team for a night of the dopest beats around. Don’t miss this act
She relocated to South Africa in 2012 after living in London and studying Sound Engineering for four years. My love for BASS driven music emerged whilst spending time in the underground music scene, clubs and various music studios.
Upon my return, I enrolled at the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) in Johannesburg and majored in audio post-production. During my studies I also completed a DJ course with DJ4Life, under instructor Ian Credible, who has become my mentor and friend.
In 2013 I was scouted by YFM 99.2 the leading Youth radio station in South Africa and began my journey as a radio hostess on the Hot 99 radio chart show.
In 2015 my collaboration with female bass rapper and performer Lex La Foy led to the opportunity to be a part of the Purple Velvet Hip Hop tour, which took place in: Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This collaborative effort was in conjunction with German rapper Sookee and American rapper Shirlette Ammons.
In 2015 and 2016 I went to Europe, hosted parties and played at numerous spots in Paris and Berlin. I traveled solo to Europe for a Summer tour to ingest some valuable knowledge on what the European scene was investing in. I was also fortunate enough to play at several events, such as:
Berlin female Focus Festival and Berlin Fashion Week after party hosted by Eve Without Adam.
